Coniferous Evergreen Trees

North American coniferous evergreen trees belong to the plant order "Coniferales", referring to a species with branches that bear slender needles and cones. They are a softwood perennial species, which normally retain needles or foliage throughout the entire year, giving to the name "Evergreen". Coniferous trees are a long living species, with some reaching great height, while others only reach moderate heights upon maturity.

Coniferous evergreen trees make a good choice for ornamental trees for landscaping purposes. Their evergreen nature will provide an excellent contrast to your yard during the winter months when deciduous species lose their foliage. Another popular alternative to ornamental use is privacy trees. With proper planting and careful pruning, many coniferous trees can be trained to grow as hedges and privacy bushes. Additionally, the species make a good choice for planting on disturbed soil. The final look of mature coniferous trees can vary greatly from species to species, with some tall lean and mostly symmetrical, while other species are more broad with an irregular shaped outline. This allows a greater flexibility in choosing the species that best suits your individual tastes.

Some ground cover species retain their green color during the winter months, while other species' leaves will change color on the approach of autumn. Many species bear flowers and berries in the spring to summer months.

Ground cover species make an excellent choice for areas unsuitable for grass, as well as areas with poorer quality soil. Most species can be easily trimmed or pruned, allowing a great amount of flexibility in their use for landscape purposes. Some species also serve well as ornamental plants.
