Description: The Western Sword Fern is a robust evergreen shrub, with long, sword-shaped branches and leaves with a mature height of 3 feet. It is native to Western North America, including Alaska, Western British Columbia, Washington State, Idaho, Northwest Montana as well as Oregon and Northern California. Its typical growth pattern is a clumped, mostly upright formation. It is very adaptable and can be used as ground cover as well as single shrubs. In the wild, it is often found mixed in among coniferous forests.

Site Conditions: The Western Swordfern is adaptable to different soil types, but prefers medium-textured, rich, loamy soil. It prefers moist soil but can tolerate wet soil, providing it is well drained. Once established, it is known to be drought resistant. It prefers full shade exposure and can tolerate partial shade conditions.
