The Vine Maple is a small species of maple which generally reach heights of 10-20 feet when mature. It is native to the West coast of North America from Southern British Columbia to Washington State, Oregon and Southern California. It is highly sought after for landscaping as it is adaptable and suitable to small to medium sized yards. The medium-sized maple leaves range from 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches in width, taking on a bright green color in the spring, which transform into brilliant hues of yellow, red and orange in the fall. Flowers develop in the late spring months which become winged v-shaped seed pods in the fall months. The species is very suitable for river and stream embankments with root structure that help prevent soil erosion. The species can be found with a single truck pattern, but more commonly found with a multiple trunk pattern. Branches are irregular shaped, often winding along the trunk of the tree. In the wild, the species is commonly found along the banks of steams, moist fields and bordering wetland areas.
The Vine maple is adaptable to a range of soil types. It prefers moist soils but tolerant to drier soils as well. The species prefers partial shade exposure and tolerant to full shade conditions. If the soils conditions are right, it can sometimes tolerate full sun conditions.
