Species: Tall Oregon Grape

Scientific Name: Mahonia Aquifolium

Classification: Deciduous Shrubs

Description: The Tall Oregon Grape is an evergreen species of shrub that is known to grow up to 8 feet in height in the right conditions. It is native to the mountain and forest regions of the West coast, including British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and California. Although preferring open areas and full sun exposure, it is tolerant to partial or shade conditions at low to middle elevations. It is a rugged-looking shrub and its evergreen nature makes it an excellent choice for hedges and privacy bushes. Its green leaves somewhat resemble those of holly and in spring, fragrant, bright yellow clustered flowers yield to purple edible berries in the early fall. In the wild, the species is commonly found in open, wooded areas.

Site Conditions: The Tall Oregon Grape is adaptable to a range of soil types. It is a highly adaptable species and can adapt to soils that are dry, moist or wet, but not typically standing water areas. It can also adapt to full sun to full shade conditions.
