Red Flowering Currant
The Flowering Red Currant is a medium-sized deciduous shrub that can reach heights of 6 feet. It is native to the West coast of North America, including British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and sparse sections of Idaho, where it is considered an imperiled species. The shrub tends to grow tall, with small 1-3 inch long green lobed leaves emerging in the spring and are quickly eclipsed by showy clusters of pink to light-red flowers are visible until summer, when they will yield dark purple edible berries in the mid-summer. The berries are tart, but suitable for jam and also prized among local wildlife including many species of birds and mammals. It excels in rocky, well-drained soil with good sun exposure, but also is somewhat shade tolerant. It also performs well on banks and slopes.
The Flowering Red Currant can tolerate a range of soil types, but it prefers rocky, well drained soil. It prefers drier soil, but can tolerate moist soils as well. It prefers full sun exposure, but can tolerate partial shade conditions.
